how is an earthquake measured?
there are 2 ways of measuring an earthquake the Richter scale and the Mercalli scale. The Richter scale was invented by Charles Richter in 1934, it gives a measurement from 0 - 10. It indicates what was felt and what damage was done. The Mercalli scale was invented by Giuseppe Mercalli in 1902, it gives a measurement from 0 - 12. it indicates the density of population of the affected site and the depth below the ground were the fault line began to rupture. these to scales do not match up.
